“We See What We Want to See”

Elín Sigríður María Ólafsdóttir

Elín Sigríður María Ólafsdóttir (b. 1983) is the artist of the festival Art Without Borders 2024. Elín works in the field of visual art, theatre and poetry. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions, as well as presenting a solo exhibition of her works at Café Mokka. Notable group exhibitions include Influencers at The Icelandic Folk and Outsider Art Museum in 2022 and a collaborative exhibition with artist Kristín Gunnlaugsdóttir in Listasalur Mosfellsbæjar as part of the programme of Art Without Borders in 2012. Elín has also exhibited her works abroad at the gallery Inuti in Stockholm. On stage, she has performed with Tjarnarleikhúsið and she is a consultant on matters of inclusion at Listvinnzlan. Elín graduated with a diploma in visual art from The Reykjavík School of Visual Arts in 2017.

Elín started honing her creative skills at a young age, channelling her artistry through both words and images. Elín also has a great love for theatre and performance, having been involved with the theatre troupe Tjarnarleikhúsið for years, as well as publishing poetry and working on stage production in various capacities, including stage and costume design. At this solo exhibition, the artist presents works that span her entire career, from the very beginning. Elín often works with fantastical imagery, in addition to drawing on the self and self-representation in various ways in her artistic output. She then invites guests to engage with the works through their own imagination, perhaps opting to write short stories or poems inspired by her art. Those that are willing may even get on stage to recite a piece of their own choice during the course of the exhibition – in conversation with Elín’s works.
