Phenomenes – Words

On Sunday Octorber 11th at 8 p.m. the first Phonemes concert of the semester will be held in Hafnarborg, where Kristín Þóra Haraldsdóttir violist and composer will perform a new version of the music theater piece Words by Gréta Sigurðardóttir composer. Kristín Þóra composed the new version with regard to Öll fallegu orðin, a book of poems by Linda Vilhjálmsdóttir which was published in the year 2000. Words, music and physical expression are here combined into one unseparable whole, where the optical and acoustic elements of the project are interlinked with the input of the poems. The performance is about an hour in transit.

Kristín Þóra Haraldsdóttir, violist, performs equally the roles of an artist, composer and improvisation actor. She regularly performs with orchestras, singing bowls and improvisation actors, and has worked with a number of groups related to physical theater and performances. Kristín Þóra has premiered many new works for solo viola at festivals such as the Dark Music Days in Iceland, Tectonics Glasgow and Dogstar festival in Los Angeles. Kristin studied viola at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and graduated in 2011 with a master’s degree in performance, composition and integrated media at California Institute of the Arts.

Þórunn Gréta Sigurðardóttir, composer, has over the years composed her work in varied kinds of visual related media such as video works, installations and animation, as well as focusing on the possibilites of music theater in her approach in the recent years. Þórunn Gréta graduated with a baccalaureate in composition from the Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2011 and with a Master’s degree in composition from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Hamburg in January 2014. She has attended master classes in composition, piano and improvisation in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany and Iceland.

Phonemes is a concert series at Hafnarborg, dedicated to presenting music by various contemporary composers from the 20th and 21st century with a focus on small settings of chamber music. Light is shed upon subjects of contemporary music today and the artistic research of composers in the abstract world of poetry of sounds. The name of the series, Phonemes, references the basic unit of language’s phonology, phoneme, which can be combined and re-arranged with other phonemes in terms of forming meaningful units such as words or morphemes. Each concert is a combination of various phonemes that could or could not bring a meaning to the audience. The Phenomenes concerts are sponsored by the Tónlistarsjóður, the Musical fund of the Ministry of Education in Iceland.

Concert tickets are available through the web on www.midi.is and www.tix.is and also in Hafnarborg’s reception or through phone, nr. 585-5790.  General price of the ticket is 2500 ISK and 1500 ISK for senior citizens and students.
