Phonemes: Side by Side – Soraya Nayyar and Jacek Karwan

Sunday April 26th, at 8 p.m., percussionist Soraya Nayyar and double bassist Jacek Karwan will perform at Hafnarborg, presenting a varied programme that places the double bass and percussion in the spotlight, focusing on two instruments that often serve supporting roles in larger ensembles. The programme includes works by composers Michio Kitazume, Frederic Rzewski and Áskel Másson, among others. This concert is part of Hafnarborg’s concert series, Phonemes [Hljóðön].

Tickets are available via Tix and at Hafnarborg. General admittance is 2,900 ISK, with a reduced price of 1,900 ISK for senior citizens and students. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Phonemes [Hljóðön], Hafnarborg’s concert series, is dedicated to presenting works by composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, leading audiences into unexplored sonic landscapes through the unique artistic vision of each featured composer. The series has been part of the museum’s programme since 2013.

Soraya Nayyar, percussionist, was born in the United Kingdom but grew up and began her musical studies in Poland. She graduated from Universität der Künste in Berlin and is now principal timpanist with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. Soraya has performed with several well-known orchestras, including Beethoven Orchester Bonn, Komische Oper Berlin, Konzerthausorchester Berlin and Staatsoper Hannover. She has a particular interest in chamber music and enjoys exploring new and diverse musical styles and genres. In Iceland she has appeared with Caput, the Reykjavík Chamber Orchestra and Elja Ensemble. In addition, she has founded her own concert series, The Chamber Express.

Jacek Karwan, double bassist, studied at Universität der Künste in Berlin and Hochschule für Musik in Basel. Jacek has performed widely and has appeared as a soloist with the Podlasie Philharmonic, the Reykjavík Midsummer Music festival and the Euro Chamber Music Festival. During his studies he performed with ensembles such as musicAeterna Orchestra, Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester and the European Union Youth Orchestra, as well as appearing at festivals including the BBC Proms, the Edinburgh Festival and the Salzburger Festspiele. He is one of the founders of the Polish Soloist Ensemble and has been active in the Icelandic music scene, performing with the Icelandic Opera Orchestra and the North Iceland Symphony Orchestra. Jacek was previously principal bass with the Gorzów Philharmonic and is now a member of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra.
