Phonemes: Fill & spill – Pétur Eggertsson and Lilja María Ásmundsdóttir

Sunday March 1st, at 8 p.m., composers Lilja María Ásmundsdóttir and Pétur Eggertsson will premiere a new work created specifically as an intervention within Fill & spill [Fylling], the current exhibition by artist Una Björg Magnúsdóttir in Hafnarborg’s main gallery. The concert also serves as the concluding event of the exhibition.

Throughout the performance, Lilja and Pétur will move between different locations within Una Björg’s exhibition, where their scores and instruments will transform into sculptural elements within the installation. This concert is part of Hafnarborg’s concert series, Phonemes [Hljóðön].

Tickets are available via Tix and at Hafnarborg. General admittance is 2,900 ISK, with a reduced price of 1,900 ISK for senior citizens and students. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Phonemes [Hljóðön], Hafnarborg’s concert series, is dedicated to presenting works by composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, leading audiences into unexplored sonic landscapes through the unique artistic vision of each featured composer. The series has been part of the museum’s programme since 2013.

Lilja María Ásmundsdóttir, composer, completed a B.Mus. degree in piano performance from the Iceland University of the Arts in 2016 and a master’s degree in composition from City, University of London in 2018. She completed her doctoral studies in composition at the same institution last year. Her work frequently combines sound sculpture with traditional instruments. In 2016, she received a grant from the Icelandic Student Innovation Fund to develop the sound and light sculpture Hulda, supervised by Berglind María Tómasdóttir and violin maker Jón Marínó Jónsson. The project was nominated for the President of Iceland’s Innovation Award. In 2022, she released the album Internal Human, a collaboration with dancer Inês Zinho Pinheiro, which was nominated for the Kraumur Music Awards and selected as “Experiment of the Year” by Morgunblaðið. Lilja María is also a member of the art collective Hlökk with Ingibjörg Ýr Skarphéðinsdóttir and Ragnheiður Erla Björnsdóttir. Their debut album Hulduhljóð received the Kraumur Music Awards in 2019 and was nominated for the Icelandic Music Awards as Album of the Year in the open category.

Pétur Eggertsson, composer, graduated with a BA in composition from the Iceland University of the Arts in 2018 and an MA from Mills College in Oakland, California, in 2020, where he received the Margaret Lyon Award for outstanding achievement in music. His work engages with visual art and performance, focusing on the transformation of sound through chance-based translations across different media, while also expanding the roles of both performers and audiences. Through his music, Pétur examines the cultural frameworks surrounding musical performance and explores the ideological relationship between music and society. He also releases electronic music under the name Hjalti Kaftu, plays drums with the band Skelkur í bringu and is one half of the techno-violin duo GEIGEN with Gígja Jónsdóttir. Together they received the Icelandic Theatre Award, Gríman, in 2023 for Music of the Year for their production Geigengeist, which received five nominations in total and won three awards.
